It's the ideal environment for crafting wines that express the full character of their Napa Valley AVA vineyard sources.

Each visit is a personalized experience at Tamber Bey Winery in Calistoga — tasting through current Napa Valley releases with an inside look at the art, science, and philosophy behind Stereograph. Barrel tastings and winery tours are included when available. Approximately one hour. Fee: $50 per guest, waived with a qualifying purchase. By appointment only. Requests required at least seven days in advance. Priority given to active mailing list members.

Where did the name STEREOGRAPH come from?

The stereograph is the first form of 3D photography — invented in the Victorian era and wildly popular long before cinema existed. You've probably seen them without knowing what they were: two nearly identical photographs mounted side by side on a stiff card. When viewed through a handheld lens called a stereoscope, the two images merge into a single scene with startling depth. They really work.

Max's father was an antique dealer in San Francisco with an obsessive eye for early photography. Growing up surrounded by that collection left a mark. When it came time to name the winery, the stereograph felt right on more than one level.

Because that's also a pretty accurate description of how Stereograph Wines actually works. Max and Sally are two distinct perspectives that resolve into one shared vision. Max is the artist — driven by ideas, instinct, and the visual world. Sally is the scientist — precise, deliberate, deeply credentialed in her craft. He built the aesthetic. She makes the wine. Separately they're two flat images. Together, something with real depth.

Tell me about your Semillon wine?

Most people have tasted Sémillon without knowing it. It's the backbone of Sauternes, Bordeaux's legendary sweet wine, and one of the great white grapes of the world. In Napa Valley, almost nobody grows it.
Dry Sémillon sits somewhere between Chardonnay and white Burgundy — lemon, stone fruit, white florals, a little beeswax — but with a richness and texture that's entirely its own. Give it a few years and it moves toward honey and toasted almonds. It's a white wine that rewards patience.

What the heck is Fiano?

Fiano is an ancient Italian variety from the volcanic hills of southern Italy — around since Roman times, almost nonexistent in Napa Valley.
That rarity isn't accidental. Most growers here plant Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. But Fiano is naturally built for warmth — it thrives on the valley floor, holding its acidity and developing real complexity in conditions that can overwhelm lighter varieties. It just works here.
In the glass: white flowers, pear, and stone fruit with honeyed, nutty, waxy notes and a pleasant undercurrent of hazelnut, hints of orange blossom and balanced acidity. Textural and aromatic without being heavy. Think somewhere between Pinot Gris and Viognier, but more composed and rich than either of those.

Our Chenin Blanc comes from old vines. What's the story?

Henry Ranch sits in Pope Valley, tucked behind Howell Mountain on the quieter, hotter backside of Napa Valley. The Chenin Blanc vines are gnarly, head-trained heritage plants growing in volcanic soils layered over clay and alluvial sediment. They were planted in 1947.

That date means something to us. 1947 is also the birth year of Sally's mother. There's something quietly poetic about that — vines and a person who shaped the winemaker, growing up in the same year, arriving at the same bottle decades later.

Old vines don't produce much fruit. They don't need to. What they give you instead is concentration, complexity, and a kind of rootedness that younger vineyards simply can't replicate. In the glass: honey, jasmine, lychee, and orange blossom, with a creamy texture and a briny, mouthwatering finish. It drinks like something that has been quietly waiting to be discovered.

Chenin Blanc was once one of the most planted varieties in California. Somewhere along the way, the industry moved on. We're glad this vineyard didn't.

What makes STEREOGRAPH red wines unique?

"I make wines the way I want to drink them. Balanced, textural, never forced. There's a tendency in Napa to push ripeness until a wine announces itself — I'm more interested in wines that draw you in quietly and keep you coming back to the glass.
The vineyards do most of the work. I've spent thirty years building relationships with growers whose sites I genuinely believe in, and that trust runs both ways. When you know a vineyard that well, you stop fighting it and start listening to it.
In the cellar I try to get out of the way. The reds are built with texture in mind — never edgy, even young. Approachable early, but with enough underneath to reward patience.
That's the goal every vintage."
